1. Overview: What is the Car-Part Messaging Service?

Car-Part Messaging (CPM) is an instant messaging software that is part of the Car-Part Gold package. It integrates Trading Partners and the Car-Part Gold Bulletin Board with an instant messaging client. You can make requests and sell parts in real time!

This manual is intended to walk you through the different ways to send and receive instant messages and use chat rooms for buying and selling your parts.

The next few sections will take you through Trading Partners, the Bulletin Board, and CPM showing you how easy it is for you to communicate between the services.

2.  Buyer sends a Trading Partners private instant message

This example demonstrates a buyer performing a Trading Partners search and then sending a private instant message to the seller.  The buyer can send an instant message directly to the seller of the part asking for a request for quote (CP-RFQ).

First, perform a Trading Partners search and locate the part you wish to buy.  If the seller has signed up with the CPM service, then you will see a link in the Dealer Info box to ‘Send an Instant Message’ to the seller.

Click on the link ‘Send Instant Message’ to send an instant message to the seller.  You can add any additional comments to the instant message CP-RFQ before pressing enter and submitting it to the seller.  Once you press enter, the message will be sent and arrive in the seller’s CPM.

You can add additional information before sending the instant message.

2a. Seller receives a TP instant message from buyer

Once the buyer sends the instant message from Trading Partners, the seller receives the request for quote.  The following screen will appear in the seller’s CPM.

2b. Seller replies back to Trading Partners buyer

Once the seller receives an instant message from a buyer performing a Trading Partners search, the seller can reply back to the buyer with a quote or any additional information.

The seller types in a reply to the buyer and presses enter to submit the instant message.

Seller types reply.

The buyer will see the information show up in CPM.

The buyer responds back to the seller that he will buy the part.

3.  Buyer sends a Trading Partners CP-RFQ to a chat room

After you perform a Trading Partners search, you can submit a CP-RFQ directly into a chat room.  Click on Custom Searches within Trading Partners.  Select the chat room that you would like to submit the request to.

Request will be submitted to the ARM chat room.

The members logged into this chat room will automatically see this request once it is submitted from Trading Partners.  Please refer to Section 15 to find detailed information on logging into a chat room.

3a. Buyer submits a CP-RFQ to a chat room without using Trading Partners

A buyer can submit a CP-RFQ directly to a chat room without using Trading Partners.

To do this, you must first be logged into the chat room.  Type in your request for quote and press enter to submit it to the chat room.  You MUST type in ‘CP-RFQ’ in your message when submitting to a chat room.  This is a key word in the chat room and will notify the other chat room members by sound that a new message has arrived.

3b. Seller replies back to the buyers CP-RFQ message from a chat room

Once a CP-RFQ has been submitted to a chat room, you can reply back to the buyer with a private instant message.  Just click on any of the text of the specific message in the chat room and it will open up a private instant message with the buyer.  You can then add any additional information to the instant message.

The screen shot below illustrates adding additional infor mation to the instant message after clicking on the text from a chat room.

After pressing enter, the instant message is submitted to the buyer.  Shown in screen shot below.

The buyer and seller can continue to have a private chat back and forth.

4.  Seller sends a Bulletin Board CP Quote to buyer

A seller using the Bulletin Board can send a private message (CP Quote) to the buyer.

From the Bulletin Board, click on the link with the light bulb under Buyer Contact/Comments.  This will bring you to a CPM screen where you can send an instant message directly to the buyer.

Once the seller clicks on the instant message link in the Bulletin Board a CPM screen will come up.  The seller can add any additional comments to the CP-Quote before pressing enter and submitting it to the buyer.

4a. Receiving a lower quote from the Bulletin Board vs Trading Partners

From the Bulletin Board the seller can send a private message to the buyer.  The seller can add any additional information to the quote before sending it.  In the example below, the seller sends an instant message to the buyer with a quote that is for less money than what was shown in Trading Partners ($2100 in Trading Partners vs $1950 in the quote).

5.  Sending an instant message to a contact in your roster

When you first install CPM, you will automatically have a roster created with contacts listed under the group ‘Recyclers’.

To send an instant message to a contact in your roster, double click on the name of the contact in your roster.  A tab will appear with the contact’s ‘username – Chat’ on it.  Type your message in the lower pane of the chat window and press enter to submit the message.

The message has been submitted.

6.  Replying back to an instant message

When you receive an instant message, a tab will appear within CPM with the contact’s ‘username – Chat’ on it and an orange light bulb indicating you have a new message.

Indicator that a new message has arrived.

Click on the tab and the message will appear in the chat window.  To reply back, just type in your message in the bottom pane and press enter.

7.  Presence

The term presence within CPM is used to describe the status of a user.   Listed below are the different presence options:

Available                 Free to chat

Away                      Extended Away

Do not disturb

CPM has been setup with two default presence settings.

Away – If you are idle on your computer for longer than 5 minutes, your CPM will automatically go into away mode and the presence will change to ‘Away – longer than 5 minutes’.

Extended Away – If you are idle on your computer for longer than 30 minutes,  your CPM will automatically go into extended away mode and the presence will change to ‘Extended Away – longer than 30 minutes’.

Your presence will automatically change back to ‘Available’ as soon as you touch your computer and are not idle anymore.

You will notice in the CPM roster as well as the chat room roster the light bulbs next to the contact’s name.  This light bulb shows you the status of the contact and whether they are available or away.

8. Account Setup

Here's how to register an account with a Car-Part Messaging server.

When you open the CPM Client for the first time, you'll see a start screen like the one shown below:

Fill in Username and password fields with the information that was provided to you. Check the "Save Password" box.

Server:
    im.car-part-im.com

Username:
Your username is everything to the left of the @ sign in your CPM id.
Example, if the CPM id is gregg@AutoRecyclers.org then your username will be "gregg"

Click "OK" and the program will attempt to log in to the server.

9. Testing It Out

The Car-Part.com server at im.car-part-im.com runs an "echo" service that enables you to send a message and receive the same message in reply. This is very basic, but it enables you to test whether your account is working.

To perform this test, send a new message by opening your CPM Client (double click on the light bulb in the system tray) and selecting Messaging -> Send Instant Message.
You'll see a message window such as that below:

For the CPM ID, enter im.car-part-im.com/echo, then click "OK"

You should then see the following window.  Type a subject and a message and click "Send" or hit the Return key.

You will almost immediately receive an echo of your message (shown in screen shot below).

10. Enabling People to Find You

The main attraction of instant messaging is the ability to talk with your co-workers and other recyclers in real time. To chat with someone, you need to know their UserName. Unfortunately, you're not necessarily going to know the UserName of the person you're trying to reach. So the question naturally arises: how do you find people?

The Car-Part Messaging service has its own directory containing basic information about the people who use it. This directory is called the User Directory (UD). While you are not automatically added to this directory when you register with the Car-Part Messaging Service, you can choose to add yourself to this directory if you would like other people to be able to find you.

To add yourself to the UD, open the CPM Client (double click on the light bulb in the system tray), select Tools -> Messaging Browser. You will see the following window:

Right click on "Car-Part IM users" and select "Register."
Click "Next" on the resulting screen, and then you should see the following window.

Enter your information into the appropriate fields and click "Next" to send your information to the UD.
Note: name is the UserName you chose in Section 8. The other information may be whatever you wish.
Remember, this information will be used to find you, so make it clear enough so people won't have a hard time looking you up.

11. Finding Other People

In order to find someone in the User Directory (UD), open the CPM Client (double click on the light bulb in the system tray) and select Tools -> Contacts -> Search for a Contact. You will see the following screen:

Make sure jud.im.car-part-im.com appears in the dropdown box, and then click "Next." You will then see the following screen.

Type in the criteria you'd like to search on (first name, last name, username, etc.) and click "Next". The UD will return a list of users who match your criteria:

Now you can easily add the desired user to your contact list by clicking the user's entry and then clicking the "Add Contacts" button in the lower right. As we discuss in detail in the next section, that will send a subscription request to the person you selected.

12. Adding People to Your Roster

One of the key concepts of instant messaging is presence -- the ability to know when someone is online and available for chatting.  In order for you and another person to see each other's presence, you need to make a mutual agreement to do so, rather like a handshake in real life. Here's what happens:

You send a subscription request to another person. If you know the exact Username, you can just do Tools > Contacts > Add Contact (or see the section above on "Finding People"):

13. Managing Your Contact List

Your contacts will automatically be placed in a group named ‘Recyclers’ when you install CPM for the first time or manually add contacts to the roster.  As you start using the application and feel that you would like your contacts divided further into other groups, you can easily set up new groups.  A contact can be in one or more groups.

To create a new group, select a specific contact in your list, right-click on the contact and select the Properties option.  Click on Groups from the list on the left:

You can add a new group by typing a name and clicking "Add Group."

To assign a contact to one or more groups, simply click the box next to the group in the upper portion, then click "OK" at the bottom.
If a group already exists, you can also drag and drop a contact in the roster from one group to another

14. Sending and Receiving Messages

To send a message to someone in your contact list, simply double click on the contact, type your message in the box, and press Enter. You will see your message show up in the upper portion of the message window.

If you already have a message window open, and someone replies/sends you a message, you will see it displayed in the upper portion of the message window. However, if someone else initiates a conversation with you and you do not have a message window open, you will see a tab appear that says "UserName - Chat" with an orange light bulb next to it. Clicking on this tab will open the window and allow you to view the message.

15. Groupchat/Joining a Chat Room

One of the many features of the Car-Part.com Messaging Service is the ability to engage in a discussion with many people at once (a.k.a. "groupchat"). This section describes how to join a chat room.

There are 2 ways to join a chat room:

1.  Open the CPM Client (double click on the light bulb in the system tray) and select Messaging -> Join a Chat Room to bring up the window for joining a room.

Fill in the room name for the room you want to join or click the button next to ‘Browse servers for a room to join’ (see screen shot below).

Highlight the chat room you want to join and click on Finish.  You will be placed in the chat room.

2.  Click on Tools -> Messenger Browser.  You will see the following screen appear.

Click on Car-Part Chat Rooms and a list of available chat rooms will show up on your screen.

Right click on the chat room that you would like to join.  Click on ‘Join chat room’.  You will be placed in the chat room.

Once you are in a chat room, the messages that you send will be seen by the entire chat room.
